  • Oil for frying (enough to submerge the onion)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp horseradish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onion by peeling off the outer layers and slicing off about an inch from the top while keeping the root intact.
  2. Place the onion cut-side down on a board and slice downward in a star pattern without cutting through the root (aim for 12-16 cuts).
  3. Soak the onion in a mixture of buttermilk and hot sauce for at least 30 minutes.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix flour with paprika, garlic powder, salt, and cayenne pepper.
  5. Remove the onion from buttermilk, allowing excess liquid to drip off, then dredge it in the seasoned flour mixture.
  6. Heat oil in a deep pot to 375°F (190°C) and carefully lower the coated onion into the hot oil, frying until golden brown (about 3-5 minutes).
